Richard Mille RM 50-03 McLaren F1 Manual Winding Tourbillon Split-Seconds
Richard Mille RM 50-03 MCLAREN-F1
The world's lightest split-seconds tourbillon chronograph
Relentless technological innovation, a quest for perfection and a constant desire for progress are the common factors that connect McLaren-Honda and Richard Mille.
The new Richard Mille movement, produced in collaboration with the renowned Formula 1 manufacturer, is a technological masterpiece, offering exceptional mechanical performance.
The RM 50-03 Tourbillon Two-Second Chronograph Ultralight McLaren F1 weighs less than 40 grams (including the new strap), making it the lightest mechanical chronograph ever built.
This milestone was achieved through the use of cutting-edge technological materials. Not only does the design incorporate titanium and carbon TPT™, it also introduces an entirely new material to the watchmaking world: Graph TPT™, commonly known as graphene.
These new applications for the material emerged through research at the National Graphene Institute, which was established at the University of Manchester in 2015. Graphene was first isolated here in 2004 by Prof. Andre Heim from the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy. Six years later, the discovery won the prestigious 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics for its authors, along with his colleague Professor Konstantin Novoselov.Swiss replica watches
Thanks to a collaboration between the University of Manchester, McLaren Applied Technologies and North Thin Ply Technology (NTPT®), Richard Mille has successfully produced a case machined from modified carbon TPT™.
Graphene is a revolutionary nanomaterial that is six times lighter than steel and 200 times stronger, so the physical properties of carbon are significantly enhanced. McLaren Technology Group and McLaren-Honda are currently working on integrating graphene into their Grand Prix race cars, making it possible to see this material as a means of significantly reducing the density of carbon composites while increasing their drag.
Convinced of the incredible benefits of graphene, our engineers worked with engineers at North Thin Ply Technology to envision practical applications for this new material and investigate how it could be incorporated into Carbon TPT™.
Carbon TPT™ is known for its beautiful undulating stripes on its surface, consisting of parallel filaments - in fact, it has a maximum thickness of 600 layers with a maximum thickness of 30 microns. These are impregnated with a graphene-containing supercharged resin, which is then compiled by a CNC machine that shifts the orientation of the fibers 45° between layers.
The composite was then cured by heating it to 120°C under 6 bar pressure. Extensive control and verification testing by McLaren Applied Technologies made it possible to develop a solution resulting in Graph TPT™, a material exclusively used by Richard Mille in watchmaking.Porsche Design 1919 GLOBETIMER 4046901418205
At the Richard Mille manufacturing facility, our team specializing in the machining of movement components and cases turns their attention to manipulating the Graph TPT™ - spending a lot of time creating and programming cutting tools suitable for achieving micron-level precision.
The resulting three-part case has nowhere to go, being both highly durable and extremely light, while retaining perfect ergonomics and a unique and eye-catching look.
On its own, the 7-gram movement fully deserves the qualifier "ultra-light". The secret to its lightness is the use of grade 5 titanium and carbon TPT™ in the baseplate and bridges, as well as the extreme skeletalization of the components. Likewise, titanium's density, stiffness and low thermal conductivity make it the material of choice for McLaren's Formula 1 engineering build program, where it is used not only to lighten and strengthen chassis and aerodynamic elements, but also to produce transmissions, connecting rods and valve system.
Watchmaking techniques are used throughout this movement, with brushed, polished, satin-finished and soft-polished surfaces all handcrafted. For example, every grade 5 titanium dial requires 3 hours of chamfering and polishing in our workshop to accentuate its edges. Other parts, such as toms, split wheels, and medium and small wheels, feature round grains up and down, then hand-chamfered and rhodium-plated before cutting the teeth A lateral cage made of carbon TPT™ Inspired by McLaren-Honda One The wishbone suspension structure of a Formula One race car is attached to the strap and supports the entire RM50-03 movement. By eliminating the case ring, this unusual construction enables a perfect fit between the movement and the case. Taken together, these technical solutions provide a complex movement with enormous resistance characteristics. In fact, the case endured a shock load of 5,000 grams in our own workshop without damage.best replica watches
The RM 50-03 McLaren F1 is the perfect chronograph: it combines a tourbillon escapement with a split-seconds function. In order not to go wrong, combining these two complexities in one mechanism requires perfect energy transfer. The consequent need to reduce friction led to research into how to improve the tooth profile on the barrel and gear train. The result is superbly balanced torque and optimized output.
The performance of the movement and the quality of energy delivered can be easily read through a coloured indicator indicating a 70-hour energy reserve and a torque sensor. The hollow pusher of the chronograph is representative of the McLaren-Honda air intake ducts, while the shape of the crown is borrowed from the racing rims used by the British team.
The design of the new split-seconds mechanism and extensive research into the working of the split-seconds collet have resulted in a 50% reduction in the energy consumption of the chronograph, while reducing the friction of the arbor. The 6-column wheel of the various rockers for controlling the split-seconds function is designed to ensure perfectly synchronised movements, clean functional locking and a highly stable setting.
The extraordinary properties of graphene have prompted us to collaborate with strap supplier BIWI SA for more development and incorporate this nanomaterial into the rubber strap of the RM 50-03 to increase its elasticity and wear resistance. These different applications of graphene represent significant technological advancements, and are of critical importance to both Richard Mille and McLaren-Honda.replica Patek Philippe Aquanaut Watches
